A multi-pitch route is a climbing route that has more than one pitch, on rock, usually, but also on ice and mixed terrain. A multipitch route can be pre-equipped with bolts and/or pitons, or not equipped and then has to be protected using trad gear. Combinations of nuts and bolts are also common, so that the belays are bolted, but most of the climb isn't. Multipitch routes can be free or aid routes.

A Multipitch route that needs more than one day to climb is called a big wall.
