This system is better for multipitch routes, and for routes that are not going straightforwardly up (have traverses, for example).

The third method is called twin rope and uses even skinnier ropes than for double rope. These ropes are treated as if they were one rope, and they are both clipped into all the pieces. This method is common in mountaineering, on alpine, ice and mixed routes, and for multipitch rock routes, especially stright and bolted ones.

The climbing is similar for all three methods: the route is devided to pitches, whose maximum length is the length of the rope (in French: "longeurs) which means "rope lengths"). At the end of each pitch the is a belay stance.

+
A subject that tends to be skipped when discussing ropes is that thicker ropes, are more abrassion resistant and therefore more durable. For example, a single rope will lastlonger than a double or twin ropes, and in any case, 9mm ropes are more durable than 8.5mm, etc.

+
This is true under the assumption that all other factors are the same (i.e. similar quality, sheath density, rock types et).

leading

This page describes the major leading methods, which are different ways to lead (and belay) a route. Each method is described here, along with its cons and pros, and the types of routes it's best for. The association of the type of rope and belay system with a type of route, though, is only general, and there may be extreme cases where the best choice would be different from what is stated here.

Top-rope is a different belay system, and is discussed in details in an article of its own.

There are three main leading methods. The original system used natural fiber ropes, and utilised dynamic body belay techniques, usually without a belay device. The modern version uses a friction device and a single NyLon rope and is called Single rope climbing. This system is especially efficient for short, mostly single-pitch routes, sport routes and for multipitch routes that have a walk off and do no not need rappeling for the descent.

The second method is double rope, and uses two thinner ropes, each one of which can take the shock of breaking most lead falls. Each rope is called a Half rope. This system is better for multipitch routes, and for routes that are not going straightforwardly up (have traverses, for example).

The third method is called twin rope and uses even skinnier ropes than for double rope. These ropes are treated as if they were one rope, and they are both clipped into all the pieces. This method is common in mountaineering, on alpine, ice and mixed routes, and for multipitch rock routes, especially straight and bolted ones.

The climbing is similar for all three methods: the route is divided into pitches, whose maximum length is the length of the rope (in French: "longeurs) which means "rope lengths"). At the end of each pitch the is a belay stance.

A small comparison table:

Leading method/Rop type Simbol Diameter [mm]
Single rope Singleicon.jpg 9.4 - 11 Single.jpg
Double/Half rope Doubleicon.jpg 8.3 - 9.1 Double.jpg
rope Twin Twinicon.jpg 8 - 8.8 Twin.jpg
A subject that tends to be skipped when discussing ropes is that thicker ropes, are more abrassion resistant and therefore more durable. For example, a single rope will lastlonger than a double or twin ropes, and in any case, 9mm ropes are more durable than 8.5mm, etc.

This is true under the assumption that all other factors are the same (i.e. similar quality, sheath density, rock types et).

single rope

Single rope leading

double rope

Double rope leading

twin rope

Twin rope leading

moving together

Simultanios climbing

In this method, the climbers are roped together, and moving at the same time. This way, the climb is not divided into pithces at all. This style is also known as simul-climbing Moving together is very common on alpine climbs but can be used on any route. If we consider the simlple case of rock cimbing, instead of having the leader go while the belayer stays at the same time, both are advancing, the leader places protection and clips the rope, and the second cleans each piece as he reaches them. In case of a fall, the other climber is the counter weight and both stop hanging from an anchor between them. When the leader runs out of gear, he stops to recollect everything from the second.

roped solo

pseudo leading
